Last fall, the Justice Arts Coalition team sat down and began to plan a convening. Months later, our dream is now a reality: from June 24 to June 26, JAC is offering a virtual convening called Art for a New Future. Convene: to come together. We invite you to join our table, to come together with our national network of people working and learning at the intersection of arts and justice. We invite you to imagine a future where the arts are an essential piece of the abolitionist framework, a future where prisons are eradicated. Read on for a full picture of our values, mission, and specific content offerings, along with ticket information. We hope that this convening serves as a step on the staircase to liberation.
Tickets are now available for Art for a New Future: Justice Arts Coalition’s 2021 National Convening
(June 24-26, 2021 online, 11:30 AM – 4:30 PM EST daily)
Join the Justice Arts Coalition community for three days of interactive and embodied art experiences, skill-sharing, and conversation. Participants will learn, create, and connect, harnessing the liberatory power of the arts as we reimagine justice.
The Convening will run from 11:30am to 4:30pm EST each day, including a daily plenary and a diverse selection of workshops, panel discussions, and presentations throughout. There will also be a performance or screening each evening at 8:00pm EST.
Plenary 1: In Conversation with Nicole Fleetwood, Ndume Olatushani, Rachel Nelson, moderated by Sabra Williams.
Plenary 2: “Abolition is About Making Things” moderated by Mariame Kaba. Featuring Rachel Wallis, Monica Trinidad, Naima Thomas, Bianca Diaz, and Neta Bomani.
Plenary 3: “Poverty Scholarship: Poor People-Led Theory, Art, Words, and Tears Across Mama Earth” with Lisa “Tiny” Gray-Garcia and POOR Magazine/Prensa POBRE.
All workshops, discussions, and performances align with one or more of the central themes and core values of Art for a New Future:
- Art as Abolition: the arts as a pathway for communities to imagine and build worlds beyond policing and incarceration; art as a tool for advocacy, nurturing community.
- Art for All: increasing access to creative opportunities within carceral institutions; pedagogy; funding; trauma-informed arts education.
- Solidarity and Community: building and nourishing connections and resilient relationships across our network.
- Participatory Learning: learning through and within community, through embodiment, through creative practice; artistic practice as a tool for healing, growth, connection, and fueling our radical imaginations.
Registration Information:
Justice Arts Coalition seeks to eliminate all barriers, financial and otherwise, to attendance. Our payment tiers are structured on an equity scale to accommodate varied financial abilities. Ticket price includes access to all sessions over all three days and is self-determined. We can only offer a limited number of free tickets; the free tickets allow our community members with limited means to attend. Consider your proximity to power, privilege, and resources when selecting a ticket tier so that we can move towards equity. Funds raised through registrations will cover convening expenses, including honorariums for our presenters, and net proceeds will support increased honorariums for system-impacted presenters.
