by Guy La"Tron" Banks, a.k.a Tronee Threat It's two a.m. I can't sleep. I find myself inside the restroom stall of the dorm I share with 200 other men, but no one happens to be in here with me and it is quiet enough to hear my thoughts and feel my emotions. I throw on …

Justice Arts Coalition
In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander He In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, JAC is highlighting the work of AAPI artists in our network in May’s Gallery of the Month. We hope to amplify the voices and stories of Asian Americans and acknowledge that, historically, many of their contributions to the fabric of U.S. culture and history have been overlooked.

In viewing this month’s gallery, we hope you will also acknowledge the role of the carceral state in the lives and histories of the AAPI community. The NAACP reports that 35% of Asian adults feel targeted because of their race. And, according to authors Cathy Hu and Sino Esthappan, the Pacific Islander community in Hawaii endures 4x higher incarceration rates than non-Hispanic whites. In light of this reality, we believe it is important to recognize the various struggles the AAPI community faces—from stereotyping and criminalization, to the larger history of ostracization—and to challenge the xenophobia that lives within this country.

Learn more and view our Gallery of the Month at the link in our bio.

Artists in order: Cuong Tieu, Nhut Vo, Minh Du

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS
IMAGE I: The bust of a figure with indigenous face tattoos hovers in profil against a geometric orange and yellow background. The figure is captured in black and white, wearing an elaborate headdress, large beaded necklace, and ornate round earrings.
IMAGE II: An asian woman sits in a dark corridor, meditating. Above her floats a large, twirling goddess in a flowing blue gown. The goddess’ belt, necklace, and dress twirl outward.
IMAGE III: A manga drawing captures a figure overlooking a large, slain monster. The monster’s head rests atop a bed of rubble.
