The Birthday Party – Christopher Meredith

The birthday party went over like a lead balloon,
And that was her cry as she left the room.

I approached the cake to blow out the flame,
While I thought it all over with no one to blame.

I had ranted and raved as I tore up the house,
another year older and I blamed the spouse.

Everyone now gone, not a person in sight,
Even the uppity cat – had fled from the fight.

I’ll apologize later, and yes, it will be hearty,
Till the clock ticks down to the next birthday party.
