“It is enough that our time with loved ones is taken from us in penalty. Our voices and hearts. Expression should have a continuum always, this is the essence of life and no one should be allowed to take that from any individual under any circumstances.
In life I am many things, most recently having become a number in the American penal system; but remain throughout and always an artist; an innovator. Perseverance and innovation can be surprising results of oppressive situations and circumstances. As how a dandelion somehow manages to present itself time and time again in glorious golden splendor after being mowed over, sprayed with chemicals, or uprooted, as if to declare “I am a flower not a weed!” throughout the struggles life offers. From what is considered trash, something forgotten or considered useless can be reshaped to a beautiful work of art, both meaningful and magnificent. I like to use throw away items (non-biodegradable products; disposable packaging materials) as component or canvases in my creations as I hope for this to be synonymous with the idea that we can use innovation to redefine what we consider trash; begin to become conscientious, to treat the Earth as non-disposable; containing every form of essential non-disposable life. In correlation to the wasted lives of mass incarceration and wasteful living, purpose and beauty may yet be derived from what society has chosen to throw away. Ultimately, in our fight for the Earth and each other, we must do our best to allow our innovative spirit to persevere.” – CA
