Welcome to the newest gallery in JAC’s Gallery of the Month series, where we showcase a wide range of art and writing under unique monthly themes. Check back on the first of each month for a new collection of works by the talented artists in the JAC network. To view past galleries of the month, see our Gallery Archive.
Please fill out this form if you are interested in utilizing images from the galleries or portfolios for your own purposes. If you would like to connect with any of the featured artists, contact us. We ask that you do not utilize any of the artwork you see here without requesting permission to do so. We strongly believe that artists should have full agency over their work, so we do not share it with other entities without their consent.
“I do not think the measure of a civilization is how tall its buildings of concrete are, but rather how well its people have learned to relate to their environment and fellow man.”
– Sun Bear, Chippewa
In light of November being Native American Heritage Month, for this month’s Gallery we here at JAC want to acknowledge the history of stolen land across the Americas, the heritage of those who constructed their lives in harmony with the land, and the voices of those who continue to fight for the protection of Mother Earth. Indigenous peoples have historically been at the forefront of the fight against environmental damage and at the same time have been and continue to be disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. When we fight for the protection of our lands we are fighting for Indigenous rights. Abolition, restorative justice, and a global healing of our land cannot be achieved without the centering of Indigenous Peoples.
To celebrate the land, and the history of those who have nurtured it, November’s Gallery of the Month includes a curation of nature and landscape art. In celebration Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we have also curated a mini gallery to honor the system-impacted artists in the JAC network who identify as Indigenous, and the power of art as a tool for reclaiming histories, exercising creative expression, and healing. This mini gallery can be found on this Instagram post on our Instagram account, @the_justice_arts_coalition.
